BIOSECURITY
Biosecurity is at the core of everything we do. Because we handle chickens from many producers and locations each day, we prioritize strict, consistent biosecurity practices in every decision we make.
Our state-of-the-art shower facility is used daily by all crew members and drivers as they shower in and out before entering any farm. This facility also houses our laundering system, where all uniforms and boots are washed, inspected, and distributed by trained staff to ensure a thorough and reliable cleaning process. Our crews receive comprehensive training and are closely monitored to ensure full compliance with all biosecurity protocols.
From the beginning, biosecurity has shaped Melhorn’s culture. With roots in breeder flocks, hatchery operations, and chick sales, John Melhorn understood firsthand the importance of disease control and felt a responsibility to extend the same protections he relied on to every customer. This foundation established the standard that Melhorn—and each of our sister companies—continues to uphold today.
During the Avian Influenza outbreak in Pennsylvania in the early 1980s, the USDA recommended that all clean pullet equipment be stored indoors. We took that recommendation seriously then, and we continue to follow it now. Both our Pennsylvania and Ohio locations prioritize storage of all clean pullet equipment inside to maintain the highest level of protection.
As our policies have evolved and customer needs have changed, our stance has remained the same: if a biosecurity measure is important for one customer, it must be applied for every customer. It is easy to claim a commitment to biosecurity—living it every day, for every flock, is what truly matters. Consistency is the only way to build a culture where biosecurity comes first.
